View of the Kogelberg Mountains from Kogel Bay, South Africa
The mountain range rising high above the surf in our image is a biodiversity hotpot in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Substantial portions of the terrain are off-limits to visitors and protected within Kogelberg Nature Reserve. This reserve is surrounded by the wider protective embrace of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. These overlapping parks help the area’s rich diversity of animals and plants flourish.
And speaking of plants—it’s been said that nowhere on Earth is there a greater floral diversity than here in the ‘heart of the fynbos,’ which describes the wide range of vegetation unique to this area. Nature’s show doesn’t stop where the fynbos ends, as some of South Africa’s best whale watching occurs on the rugged shores of the nature reserve, where the mountains meet the sea.
